Kudos to Coach Rodriguez for a Fair Process
In his first high-profile disciplinary event as a coach at Michigan, Coach Rodriguez could have kicked Kevin Grady off of the team as soon as he plead guilty to violating the terms of his probation and testing positive for opioids. Instead, Coach Rodriguez explained this past weekend: "Until I get all the facts and then I sit down with him and find out what's going on, then at that point we'll make a decision." While some alums have been calling for Grady's head, I believe that Coach Rodriguez is handling this unfortunate situation correctly by establishing a process that incorporates Grady. I honestly can't imagine that Grady will be able to convince Coach Rodridguez that he has held up his end of the bargain as a Michigan football player once he is released from jail, but I like that fact that Coach Rodriguez wants to hear what Grady has to say before making a final decision. Grady has given four plus years to the program, and he is at the very least entitled to be heard. This approach sends a signal to all Michigan players that, while he has absolute control over the program and their future as Wolverines, Coach Rodriguez will afford them the respect they have earned by participating as athletes in the program. For all the negativity we hear from the media about Coach Rodriguez's coaching style and treatment of players, I think he's handling this one the right way.
