Fight Song Friday!

Michigan Illinois Preview

Michigan will run, and run a plenty on an Illinois rush defense that ranks last in the Big Ten. Hurt by key injuries and poor spirits, Illinois's defense will be no match for the Wolverines' offense. If Moosman and Forcier can actually get the ball into Forcier's hands, the Wolverines will score plenty of points. Look for a huge day from Carlos Brown and a solid day from Mike Shaw. The wideouts redeem themselves and the offense begins to look like the one that showed up in the early part of the season.

As good as the Wolverines will be on offense, we just don't know which Illinois team will show up to play on offense. The Wolverines have not one, but two, massive achilles' heels: the middle and back of the defense. If Illinois follows the obvious game plan to attack those parts of the field, they will be able to put up points and compete. On the other hand, the defensive line is coming off of a generally impressive performance against a tough PSU line. If they show up ready to play, Illinois may not have time to throw the medium to deep ball. But unfortunately that isn't what has killed us the majority of the season. Poor tackling, missed assignments, and blown coverage have allowed for scores that weren't dependent upon long range passing. Juice attacked us everywhere last year, including over the top. Let's see what Illinois does this year.

Look for a solid Wolverine performance. Michigan 34 - Illinois 24.

Michigan Recruit Tony Grimes Displays Offensive Prowess

Grimes is best known for his aggressiveness on the defensive side of the ball. Yesterday, Grimes caught a TD pass and also threw for one to help his team achieve victory.

Witty Still on Track to Get Back to Ann Arbor

Adrian Witty didn't get into Michigan the first time around, but that hasn't stopped the defensive prospect in developing a game plan to get to Michigan. He's on track to arrive in January.

Did you know that Witty used to be able to beat Denard Robinson in a footrace? Imagine that kind of speed in the secondary. “I stay in contact what Witty all the time and he’s excited about trying to get back up to Michigan,” former Deerfield Beach coach Art Taylor said. “And that’s someone that I think Michigan misses right now because Adrian can fly. He was the only kid that could beat Shoelace in a race.”

Rodriguez Press Conference Notes

Carlos Brown will stay at KR.

Martavious Odoms is probable for Saturday.

Greg Mathews has had a great week of practice.

Junior Hemingway will play.

Draft Prospects of Graham, Minor and Ezeh Discussed

Brandon Graham is projected as a mid-first round pick. Brandon Minor is an unknown, but has been rising of late. Obi Ezeh has been struggling of late.

Boubacar Cissoko Kicked Off Michigan Team

Boubacar Cissoko had another chance to prove himself to his coaches and teammates. He didn't. As a result, Coach Rodriguez dismissed him from the team. Cissoko's high school coach said that he was dismissed for team violations, including missing class, workouts and study table.

"That's what he was suspended for in the first place," Thomas Wilcher told The Detroit News. "He's upset. He's going to transfer as long as he can meet the requirements." Wilcher said the "social structure" at Michigan was difficult for him. "He couldn't handle it," Wilcher said. "He's always been a quiet kid. (But) he needs to do what needs to be done as a student-athlete. Nobody is bigger than the program."

The NCAA Notice of Inquiry Letter

Here is the NCAA inquiry letter received by Michigan.

Brandon Minor Listed As "Riser" for 2010 NFL Draft

Here is what a SI.com draft analyst said about "Riser" Brandon Minor:
  • Minor received late round grades entering the season but the Wolverine senior has elevated his game this year. He's a hard running, interior ball carrier that continually displays the ability to pick up the tough yardage when necessary.

NCAA Issues Notice of Inquiry to Michigan Regarding Football Program

ESPN reports that the NCAA has issued a notice of inquiry to the University of Michigan. A notice is issued when there is reasonably credible information available to suggest a violation may have occurred. The investigation will be completed by December 31st. It is unknown whether the NCAA is investigating allegations of minor or major investigations.

One concern, of course, will be the effect, if any, on recruiting. Fortunately, the December 31st deadline is prior to February's signing day, so recruits can make their decision after the first report has been made. According to the Anti-Rodriguez Press, the next step after the investigation phase would be to issue notice of allegations, assuming any violations were found. That would likely mean penalties, but the range of penalties probably won't be known until the allegations, if any, are revealed.

Keep in mind folks, the likelihood that these will result in major penalties such as losing scholarships and bowl suspensions is very low. This does not appear to be on par with the FSU cheating scandal or buying offensive lineman recruits.

Recruit Tony Jefferson Will Visit Ann Arbor

Star safety (yes, a safety!) prospect Tony Jefferson will visit Ann Arbor on November 7th for the Purdue game. Jefferson, who has verbally committed to UCLA, is looking around to make sure he's making the right decision. His final list is UCLA, Florida, Michigan and Miami.

David Molk Out for Season

Center David Molk injured his knee in last Saturday's PSU game. The injury will require surgery on his ACL in his right knee, and Molk is expected to miss the remainder of the season, as well as Spring practice. Assuming surgery goes well, he would expect to return for Summer ball.

"He planted funny or something ... And there it went," Coach Rodriguez said.

Forcier Takes Responsibility for the Loss

"I think we're beating ourselves," Forcier said. "There are reads I'm not making that we need to be making."

"I want to play the way I'm capable of playing," Forcier said. "I want people to expect me to play the way I played in the first part of the season."

Coach Rodriguez, perhaps benefiting from years of experience, pulled back the ropes and issued some words of caution. "We should not expect too much too soon," Rodriguez said. "I think sometimes you have a little success and people say your freshman year is over. It's not over."

It was clear from the game that Forcier was just one of perhaps a dozen players who made big mistakes over the course of the afternoon. Whether it was dropped passes, missed assignments, substitution errors, fumbles, interceptions, missed reads, poor snaps, everyone was responsible. The mental approach this team takes this week will likely dictate whether Michigan finishes 5-7 or 7-5/8-4.

Devin Gardner Leads Team to Monumental Upset

Devin Gardner threw 3 TDs and ran for 1 more in a 36-29 victory over Steubenville, Ohio. Prior to the loss, Steubenville had won 60 straight games at home. The win qualified Inskster (who plays no home games this season) for the playoffs, and it will play 8-1 Dearborn Edsel Ford in the first round of D2 playoffs this weekend.

Lloyd Carr Speaks Out in Support of Rich Rodriguez....Finally

During the PSU game, former coach Lloyd Carr broke his silence and spoke out in support of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. Carr had maintained his silence during much of the past year, adding to speculation that Carr represented a faction of Michigan football that was not pleased with Coach Rodriguez and his staff. That apparently changed on Saturday.

"Rich is a young guy, (and) he's got a great background for such a young guy," Carr said during his interview with Frank Beckmann and Jim Brandstatter. "What we're seeing here offensively throughout this season is a great thing for the future of Michigan football.

"The transition a year ago you could expect (the struggles) because what they were looking for in a quarterback. Certainly what we have here is exciting. I'm excited for the future."

"I've had a lot of conversations with Rich Rodriguez down through the last 18, 20 months, and I told him from the beginning if he needed me for any reason, just call me," Carr said. "I did not want to be a coach who's at practice and hanging around and answering questions from the media about what I saw. I didn't think that was good for Rich or our program."

Carr said it was "ridiculous" to suggest that he didn't support the program, and noted that he was "absolutely not" a candidate for the AD position.

"I think there's so much passion for Michigan football," Carr said. "I think everybody in this program supports and wants Michigan football to win. That's the key.

"I love Michigan. That's all I'm going to say. This university has been great to me. I've got a record -- I've been here 30 years almost."

Penn State Game Recap

What can you really say after a game like that? For the first half of the season, consistent drive killing mistakes and blown defensive assignments were the exception and not the rule. Yesterday's game changed that. No one (particularly on offense) wanted to make a play. You can't blame it on the weather because Penn State made plays. For whatever reason, the Wolverines weren't where they needed to be mentally. Did last weekend's destruction of Delaware State give them a false sense of confidence? Did David Molk's early injury shake the core of the offense's confidence? There are really more questions than answers about yesterday's performance.

But not all is lost in Wolverine land. Remember that this offense was the best in the Big Ten coming into the game. And we played the league's best defense. Where the youthful Wolverines are at mentally this week will likely dictate the results of the remaining games.

I thought Penn State called an excellent game plan offensively. I thought we beat ourselves in large part while on offense, but I was so impressed with the ability of Clark and company to find the right mismatches in critical situations. They played to our glaring defensive weaknesses in the middle and back of the field. And it worked.

Fight Song Friday!

Game Preview

Nasty weather precludes an effective deep-threat passing game. Michigan's offense exceeds expectations against an overrated Nittany Lion defense that hasn't faced a credible offense all season. Michigan's short-to-medium passing game and run offense (led by the return of David Molk) are too much for the Nittany Lions who are cold, wet, and increasingly frustrated by the offense's inability to move the ball downfield. Michigan's defense gives up one big play and the Michigan offense turns the ball over, setting up a second Penn State score. After that, it's smooth sailing for the Wolverines after a series of halftime adjustments.

Game Day Weather Report

It should be a pretty awful day weather wise. At kick-off, a temperature of around 46 degrees is expected (which should feel like 40 degrees given 15 mph winds with gusts up to 25). There is a 30% chance of rain all afternoon, so it will be drizzly, overcast, cold, and windy.

David Molk Will Start

It looks like he'll definitely get some playing time. Molk is technically listed as "probable," which means he has a 75% chance of playing. Coach Rodriguez said Molk was fully participating in practice. Yesterday, Rodriguez confirmed that he will start. "He did quite a bit yesterday in full pads,” Rodriguez said yesterday. “The report today from the trainers is that he handled it well. He was a little sore, as could be expected, but I think he came through it all well. He should be fine for Saturday."

You would think that if he could go, he'd start. Because inserting Molk would shuffle Moosman and put the right tackle position up for battle (Huyge vs. Dorrestein), it would be rather odd to insert him midway through the game. Either way, it will be great to have him back in uniform and on the field.

Boubacar Cissoko May Play Saturday; J.T. Floyd Recovering From Flu

Coach Rodriguez said yesterday there's a chance Cissoko dresses and plays, but he definitely won't start. "It really depends on the next couple days whether he plays or not on Saturday,” Rodriguez said. “He won't start, but whether he dresses, is allowed to travel or has the opportunity to play depends on the next couple of days.”

J.T. Floyd has had the flu, so let's keep them crossed neither of the starting corners go down. “I saw J.T. last night after practice, and he was feeling a lot better,” Rodriguez said. “He was hit really hard with the flu. He feels a lot better now, so hopefully he'll get back in the mix and play some for us.”

Tony Grimes and Clarence Murphy Could Be Package Deal - Grimes Has Michigan #1

"I am very interested in Michigan -- even more since they offered Clarence recently," Grimes said. "I visited there last summer and got to see everything first-hand. I like the coaching staff and the players were very friendly to me. That coaching staff came in from West Virginia and I think they have gotten accustomed to being at Michigan now. They are doing well right now. I have a great relationship with the coaches and we talk pretty often about what could happen for me at Michigan. Clarence and I will be visiting Michigan in November for the Ohio State game."

While Michigan fans are familiar with Tony Grimes, they may not be as familiar with his 3-star DE teammate Clarence Murphy. He is a 6'3" 230 pound DE with 4.6 speed. Murphy was excited to say the least upon receiving a Michigan offer.

"I got a phone call from our DB coach and he told me that he was just on the phone with the (Michigan) coaches and told me I had that offer," Murphy said. "That moment, I was really speechless because it was something that we were waiting for. Me and Tony -- we plan on going to college together. It felt pretty good to be able to get a big offer like that."

The Wolverines chances to land both look really good. "They're still in the same place," Grimes said. "Michigan will always be on the top of the board." And Murphy had previously said: "If I get an offer from Michigan -- he tells me that's what he wants to do."

But despite the good news, the duo is taking their time with the decision making process.

Interview With Kevin Koger

Courtesy of ann arbor dot com. The sophomore TE discusses his role on the field, his one-handed catch, his blocking ability, which NFL tight ends he admires, and who's the toughest to go against in practice.

Here's a clue. When Koger gets beat the defender yells "You can't block me, boy!"

Will Michigan Break Another Team's Defensive Streak?

Iowa hadn't given up a rushing TD in 33 quarters. Michigan tallied three rushing TDs.

Penn State hasn't given up a TD in the first half this season. Michigan will tally......

Tate Forcier Should be 100% for Penn State

"This is the healthiest [Tate's] been the last few weeks," Coach Rodriguez said. "We expect him to be 100 percent, if he doesn't get banged around again and reinjure the shoulder."

Joe Paterno Blasts Detroit Press

Even an objective outsider agrees the Michigan local press is trash. When asked whether he'd still be coaching if he had taken the Michigan job decades ago, Paterno said:

"Well, depends. If I could have gotten rid of some of the guys out there, I might have - in the press. I thought they were pretty tough on Rich last year, but that's beside the point."

Detroit news media: tearing Michigan football down to prop itself up.

Brandon Graham Fired Up for Penn State Game

"They better come hard because we are coming," Michigan senior defensive end Brandon Graham said. "I just don't think they really know how much preparation and how much we been waiting for this game since last year."

Joe Paterno Speaks Highly of Tate Forcier

It is now widely known that Tate's final two choices were Michigan and Penn State, so JoePa understood the power of the Force. During his press conference, he complimented the young Wolverine.

"He's a kid that just has something about him," Paterno said of Forcier. "He reminds me a little of that big kid at Florida, [Tim] Tebow. But Forcier has a little more finesse. He's not just a power player. He has that confidence, that leadership quality.

"He's a kid who probably goes to bed on Thursday or Friday night playing the upcoming game in his head. He's a good player, a coach's player."

Brandon Minor Speaks

Ann Arbor dot com details an interview with Michigan Senior RB Brandon Minor. On why he didn't play during the Delaware State game: “I wanted to play in that bad, but that was just like kind of a stats game,” Minor said on a teleconference Tuesday. “I ain’t really anxious to pad up my stats. I’d like to do it against like some competition." And Minor admitted it probably helped out his injury situation. “That helped me out,” Minor said. “I’m feeling real good.”

He still would like to reach 1000 yards rushing this year.

Stevie Brown's Goal: Rose Bowl

At yesterday's presser, Stevie Brown discussed one of his goals for the season: getting back to the Rose Bowl. "I have this feeling - I don’t know if anyone else has it - but if we can win out, we can make it to the Rose Bowl this year," Brown said.

"I got to experience it as a freshman, and I want to experience it again as a senior," he said. "It was so much fun, just how intense and big of a game it was. I mean, the Rose Bowl might not be as big as the Big House, but it's still loud and a great place to be in.

"Even though we did lose that game, and it was a great game to be a part of, and I want to go back and be a part of it again."

Michigan's Dynamic RB Duo Is Likely Healthy for PSU

Neither Brandon Minor nor Carlos Brown got a single carry last week due to lingering injuries, but both are reportedly ready to go against PSU. Rich Rodriguez said yesterday that Minor wasn't 100% but that he would likely play.

For those who don't remember, Brandon Minor ran like a MAN ON FIRE last year at PSU, at times almost missing handoffs because he exploded so quickly out of the backfield. Expect Brandon to have a monster day, and watch for him to run harder than he ever has before. He has a history of stepping up his physical play for big games. This week is one of those games, and if he's ready to go, look out.

David Molk Cleared to Practice; May Play Against PSU

Great news, Wolverine fans. The centerpiece of our offensive line has returned to practice, and just in time for PSU weekend. At this point, however, it's not clear David Molk will actually play on Saturday. That depends on how he does in practice.

"How he feels after each and every practice will determine, really, what role he can take, whether he can be starting, whether he can play the whole time, in and out, just what he can tolerate," Wolverines head coach Rich Rodriguez said. "Medically, everything has been cleared for him to go to practice. It is a matter of how comfortable he feels with that, getting back in action.

"He hasn't done much football-wise. He did a little last week, but nothing with full pads."

Article on Back Up Jack Kennedy

Nice report from ann arbor dot com exploring the story behind fifth-string QB Jack Kennedy. During last weekend's DSU game, Jack had his "Rudy moment."

Why Didn't Denard Robinson Get More Snaps Against Delaware State?

I was disappointed that Denard did not play more. I understand that the coaching staff did not want to risk injury to a player who is one injury away from being the starting QB. I also understand that we wanted to develop some of our younger, less experienced players.

But Denard's arm may be the number one thing that needs to be developed on our young team. The knock on the kid has been that he can't throw the ball. And it's not just a knock, it has largely been a reality. Prior to yesterday's game, Denard threw an interception on 20% of his passes. Yesterday, he went three of four with a dropped catch by redshirt freshman Roy Roundtree, but Coaches Smith and Rodriguez acknowledged after the game that he was late on his two TD passes. He got the job done, but there was certainly room for improvement.

The DSU game was the perfect time for Denard to get some experience throwing the ball. And by some, I mean a lot more than four passes, especially when your third and fourth stringers get twelve throws. Apparently, I wasn't alone in my belief. A whopping 86% of voters in the fan poll thought Denard should have played at least two quarters with 49% saying he should have played at least three quarters.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I think there is a disconnect between Rodriguez's public pronouncements that Denard is a starting QB and that he can make all the throws, and the fact that he has not thrown the ball well. There is no doubt Rodriguez trusts Denard. There is no better proof than the fact that Rodriguez called on Denard to deliver under the pressure of the two-minute drill against a top 15 team on the road.

Despite the tremendous ability that Denard has on the ground (although I'm not excited about the fumbles), I still don't see what the coaching staff sees in him in the air. I support Denard and hope he becomes an excellent QB at Michigan. I just don't think the coaching staff is giving him the opportunities he needs to develop the skills necessary to master the position. I thought the DSU game was the perfect opportunity.

Michigan 63 - Delaware State 6

Fight Song Friday!

Predictions: Michigan v. Delaware State

This one will get very ugly, very early folks. Expect to see Michigan's starters play the first and most of the second quarter. Enter Denard Robinson, Michael Shaw, Vincent Smith, etc.

Two questions I have going into the game: 1) will Coach Rodriguez and company decide to burn any likely redshirts, particularly those in the secondary?; and 2) can Denard Robinson throw the ball effectively, albeit against a D-II team?

I predict that Michigan will have one of its most successful games on the ground....ever.

Detroit Anti-Rodriguez Press At It Again

It's a few days old, but because of the blog's DARP boycott, I just learned of such things. Our friend Michael Rosenberg's recent article (updated at 4:27am on 10/15/09 - hey, the spin machine never sleeps) says that Rich Rodriguez "backtracked" (don't click on the link - ad revenue keeps his paychecks coming) on public claims made about the team's GPA.

For those of you unfamiliar with the topic at issue, Rodriguez said that last semester's team GPA was the highest ever for a Michigan team. Apparently, the team doesn't keep such records. Rodriguez explained to the DARP that the academic advisors who told him the information "did not make it clear that the number was just an estimate and not an exact calculation. We apologize if this has caused any confusion.”

OH MY LORD!! RUN FOR THE HILLS!! IT TURNS OUT THAT THE TEAM'S RIDICULOUSLY HIGH GPA WAS AN APPROXIMATION OF THE BEST EVER!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! AN APPROXIMATION OF THE BEST??? OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!

More fun from Mike Stoe of MLive dot com.

Rick Leach Rips Lloyd Carr

Former UM Coach/Current UM Associate Director of Athletics Lloyd Carr was called out by Rick Leach on a Detroit radio station after Coach Carr sat with a group of Iowa supporters during last Saturday's game. Leach had some very interesting things to say.

"Our ex-coach flipped a huge middle finger right in our current coach's face," Leach told host Sam Webb. "So ask people to go investigate that, Sam. There will be a lot more there. Trust me."

Yikes. Don't like the sound of that....

Adrian Witty Update

He will apparently be eligible to enroll in Michigan this January if he passes a course to boost his overall GPA. Witty did not qualify his first time around, but he is nevertheless being pursued by the Michigan coaches. He is rumored to be visiting Ann Arbor with former Deerfield teammate Cassius McDowell for the OSU game.

Forcier Will Start, Minor/Brown Ready to Go

Coach Rodriguez says Tate Forcier will get the nod against Delaware State and that Senior RBs Brandon Graham and Carlos Brown will split time during the game. Minor is close to 100% healthy, but is still struggling to explode out of his cuts due to a high ankle sprain. Brown was limited in practice earlier this week but is expected to go. Rodriguez also mentioned that he would like to get Mike Shaw and Vincent Young some additional reps, so look for those two if things get out of hand early.

Here is the video.

Tate Forcier Suffers Concussion, But Will Start If Cleared

Forcier suffered a mild concussion on his last play prior to being replaced by Denard Robinson. Yesterday, Rodriguez explained: "I don't think it was a severe one, but he still has a headache." "The doctors and trainers tell us each day and each week who's available and who's not available," Rodriguez said. "We would never put somebody out there who's not 100 percent."

Forcier is also suffering from a persistent shoulder injury. Rodriguez said the injury has limited Forcier in practice the last few weeks. He also suggested the injury may have led to several of his rookie mistakes against MSU and Iowa.

Rodriguez made clear though that the concussion was not the cause of the last minute replacement.
"I was putting in Denard anyway," Rodriguez said.

Zoltan Mesko Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Mesko averaged 53.8 yards on five punts, including a booming 61 yarder out of the end zone from the 1 yard line.

Columnist Terry Foster Joins the Witch-Hunt

Add Terry Foster to the list of reporters who have attempted to cast a negative shadow over a Michigan team that is 4-2 with two losses by a grand total of eight points. To Foster, replacing a first-year quarterback (who has been replaced before) on a team that has lost two out of six games after a 3-9 season, including one against a top twelve team, is a sign of "friction". "Michigan needs to get everyone on the same page," the title of his article proclaimed this morning.

Here's the gist of the article: "If you listened to Rodriguez address the media, all is well in the land of maize and blue. But it is not. There is something wrong with this brew. The chemistry is not as strong as it should be and it is one of the reasons doubts are hovering over this program." Foster's (objective?) game-recap article assures us that Tate's disappointment with being replaced by Denard Robinson in the fourth quarter has created "another cloud of doubt . . . settling over this program after their second straight loss."

Well folks, with Halloween right around the corner, the witches are officially out hunting again.

Excuse me? Doubts hovering over the program? Which doubts are those exactly? Chemistry, you say? Is this the same lack of chemistry that propelled us to our first 4-0 record in years? The same lack of chemistry that brought us back to win several games? The same lack of chemistry that almost brought us back to win this game?

No, no. It couldn't be the fact that we are an incredibly young and inexperienced team. It couldn't be that we have recruited poorly at several key defensive positions for several years prior to Rodriguez's arrival. It couldn't be that we have a freshman quarterback running a year and a half old system. And it couldn't be that we have a new defensive coordinator teaching young defensive players new assignments. No, no. It's the sign of a deeper problem on the team. Not only do we lack chemistry, but there is now genuine doubt over the program.

Give me a break!

Terry Foster also whined about Rodriguez not giving him "the truth"? What exactly would you like Rodriguez to say? "Um, I thought Tate was really awful today, and I didn't think he did a particularly good job? He told me he wasn't happy with my decision, and I told him he's no longer in my weekly bookclub." The truth is exactly what Coach Rodriguez said it was: he put in Denard to provide a spark. What about that don't you understand? Do you really think you are entitled to the substance of sideline communications between a player and coach? Do you really think Rodriguez would tell you?

Foster needs to stop creating doubt where none exists. For his thesis to have any credibility, he should ask Michigan players about chemistry, the overwhelming majority of whom have bought into the new system and have consistently expressed their firm belief that the team is united. He shouldn't rely on the fact that Rodriguez didn't give him a better headline at a press conference, or the fact that we lost two straight games by a total of eight points.

Why can't a tough road loss just be a tough road loss? Why do reporters like Foster have to insinuate something deeper every....single....time? Reading articles like his are simply nauseating, but are just par for the course for those local reporters who use anything negative to automatically conclude that doubt surrounds the program.

If Foster keeps it up, he'll have given this blog another local newspaper to boycott.

The Decision to Go With Denard Robinson on the Final Drive Could Have Gone Either Way

I understand the arguments on both sides. On the one hand, Denard had just led the team downfield on a relatively quick and easy drive for 7 points at the end of the game. The offense had momentum with him behind center, and the Iowa defense clearly wasn't ready for the speedy QB. We only needed to get into field goal range to win it, and Denard had proven the drive before that he could move the chains. Tate was not having his best game, and had already thrown an interception.

On the other hand, Michigan had only 1:30 to get into field goal range with no time-outs. Denard's strength has been and is the run, not the pass. He had proven in prior games that his downfield passing was questionable. Against Eastern, he threw two ugly interceptions into double coverage, one of which was under the pressures of a two-minute drill at the end of the first half. Tate has been absolutely phenomenal in crunch situations, even on the road. He's developed a national reputation as a gamer when it counts. With 1:30 left and no timeouts, you need to be able to pass the ball, and pass it well. Tate had played poorly in other games, yet still stepped it up when it counted.

What do I think? I think the call could have gone either way. Frankly, I was more disappointed in two things that ultimately led to the interception.

One, I was generally disappointed with Coach Rodriguez's constant yelling and in your face discipline of Tate on the sideline. As important as the game was, and as awesome as Tate has been, Rodriguez still needs to remember that Tate is only a freshman. He's not a two or three year starter. This is his sixth college football game, and his second game on the road. Rodriguez looked like a bulldog yesterday. Whether or not Tate was making mistakes, Rodriguez needed to exhibit more positive encouragement, and not let the general frustration of the game get the best of him. He was visibly irked the entire game, and that negatively can only have had a negative effect on everyone around him. I'm all for yelling at players when they make mistakes, but you need to have more restraint when you're dealing with a young team and particularly a freshman who you need to succeed.

This wasn't Pat White his senior year not playing well. This was Tate Forcier half-way through his first. This wasn't WVU needing to get past Pitt to get to the national championship game. This was a team coming off a 3-9 season staying in the game on the road against the 12th ranked team in the country. They need encouragement, not criticism. Ironically, Rodriguez seemed to give encouragement only to Robinson when the game was clearly over after his interception.

Second, I think we all witnessed the inexperience of Denard Robinson in clutch situations. Too often, when it comes to passing, he has tried to do too much downfield. His three interceptions have been flat out ugly, and all of them have been into at least double coverage. On the last throw, he missed two open receivers because he didn't run through any progressions. Someone who makes that throw is trying to do too much. He had his mind made up he was throwing deep. Denard is simply not a seasoned downfield thrower, and he needs much more development to be trusted in clutch situations, at least ones that require the pass. That being said, Denard showed nice touch passes on the sidelines and short-range throws.

I was surprised that he decided to throw such a deep ball at the end of the game when we only needed 4 more yards for a first down to temporarily stop the clock and move the chains. We had plenty of time to get into field goal range. We needed a first, not a bomb with :50 left. Denard's simply trying to do too much, and it shows. We can't afford that in clutch situations.

To be fair to Denard, he's seen a good amount of action in some clutch situations this year, and he hasn't had the routine consistent playing time that Tate has had this season. He's a better runner than Tate, and he gave us the spark we needed last night. I'm sure he'd be better if he had more experience. But I'm also 100% sure that we wouldn't be 4-2 if that were the case.

The bottom line going forward is that Denard cannot be relied on in clutch situations, at least not now. Tate has proven his worth, at least at the end of games. I'm all for making Denard a bigger part of our offense throughout the game, but I don't want the ball in his hands at the end of the game in a clutch situation.

Cissoko Suspended Indefinitely

Corner Boubacar Cissoko has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, reports the AP. Cissoko had told reporters earlier in the week that he'd be back for next week, but that apparently has changed. The detailsas to the cause of the suspension are unclear at this point.

UM - Iowa Predictions

The Wolverine: 17-14 Michigan. The Michigan defense shows up and plays to its ability. This is a defensive showdown in blistery cold conditions. Both offenses are able to move the ball down field but struggle to come up with long drives resulting in points. The game comes down to field position and special teams. Although several field goals are missed on the day, a late field goal clinches it for the Wolverines.

Tate Forcier Just Makes Plays

"I think it's really unusual," Ferentz said of Forcier's quick transition. "It's a huge adjustment. So a guy with that little experience, 15 days of spring ball really isn't that much for him to be doing what he's doing. (It) is really impressive, and he's given the whole team a lift.

"He's very aware, (has) great presence out there, great feel and he is a playmaker. He can improvise, which is a sign of a good quarterback. He can get out of trouble with his feet and certainly can hurt you with his throwing and has done that. I think the most impressive thing is just his demeanor out there. He'll improvise, but it seems he has a good knack, a good instinct, and that's what good quarterbacks have."

Forcier's high school coach said Forcier was never nervous, even in big high school games. "You never saw it in his eyes," he said.

"Tate is an interesting guy," senior Mark Ortmann said. "You look at him, and he has the same facial expressions on the sidelines no matter the situation. I think that's one of the most impressive things about him -- he doesn't let the pressure get to him."

Tate Forcier Interview w/ Sporting News

Tate was interviewed by Sporting News' Dave Curtis. He discusses the first few games, the team, his adjustment to college life, calls on his cell phone (people bother him all week long, including at 2 a.m.), and Iowa's defense. In response to a question about the things people are saying about him, Tate said:
You know, I just play. It's great to get recognized, to have people care about what you're doing and cheer for you. But sometimes, people make more of it than what it is. The comebacks and all that stuff, that's just how I play. When the game is on the line, I'm not going to change what I do. It's the same in the first quarter as in the fourth quarter. The situation doesn't matter.

Michigan RB Update Against Iowa

Some info trickled in after yesterday morning's post about Carlos Brown. Thanks to Steve M. who tipped us off that Brown is rumored to have suffered a concussion during practice earlier this week. However, Brown was not listed on Michigan's official injury report for Saturday's game.

Our guess is he's questionable to doubtful depending on the severity of the concussion and who you ask (Mgoblog thinks he's very doubtful). Expect to see a good dose of Michael Shaw along with Brandon Minor this weekend. I'm also going to predict that we'll see at least one set w/ DRob in the backfield.... The thought of Shoelace and Shaw in the backfield is scary, but this weekend will depend on the quality of our OL play.

Re: Minor, if history's any guide, and he gets the starting nod, expect him to run like a man possessed. We've seen it before. Remember the first half of last year's game at PSU? The man was an absolute beast. He hit the holes with such gusto and speed that he almost missed a few handoffs. If that Minor shows up, and the OL can create holes, this could be a very interesting game.

Zoltan Mesko Finalist for Senior CLASS Award

Mesko was named as 1 of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS award given annually to the player who excels in four areas: classroom, character, community, and 4th down reads, oops - I mean, and competition.

The other candidates are: Zane Beadles, Utah; Richie Brockel, Boise State; Kurtis Gregory, Missouri; Jerry Hughes, Texas Christian; Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan; Colt McCoy, Texas; Darrell Stuckey, Kansas; and Tim Tebow, Florida.

Mesko has already been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by the National Football Foundation, which honors the college senior who excels on the field, in the community and in the classroom.

More congrats to Zoltan!

Did You Know Michigan Doesn't Have a Special Teams Coach?

Interesting article courtesy of annarbor.com explaining how Michigan coaches the different units of the special teams. Each regular position coach has an area that they work on. Pretty interesting....

Will Iowa's Run Defense Force a Repeat of the MSU Game?

If you haven't been paying attention to this week's match-up, Iowa's run defense is good. Really really good. So good it hasn't given up a rushing TD in 33 quarters. Seriously. And the Iowa D has allowed an opponent to score on their opening drives once in the last 18 games.

“It’s astounding,” Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said Tuesday on the Big Ten coaches teleconference. “Normally you think maybe you get a quarterback sneak or something in the goal line that you get in there. But to have 33 straight quarters, an eight- or nine-game span, it’s really quite remarkable.”

Although the Iowa defense contained Penn State's "Spread HD," it should be noted that PSU's offense doesn't rely on the QB run as much as Michigan's. And Michigan has put up 7 more points per game than PSU. That being said, the match-ups up front will likely dictate the outcome of the game.

Iowa's offense is lackluster. If the Wolverines are allowed to get into an offensive rhythm, they will likely outscore the Hawkeyes. If the Iowa defense does what MSU did to us, it will be another long, uncomfortable game.

ESPN Story: Mealer Brothers a Lesson In Courage

Great profile, but really tough stuff (you've been warned).... That's one helluva strong kid.

Iowa Head Coach Ferentz Praises Forcier

The Daily Iowan reports that "the 11-year Iowa head coach seemingly spent more time talking about Michigan’s true freshman scrambling signal-caller than his own team’s 5-0 start and No. 12 ranking."

Discussing Forcier's late drives against Notre Dame and MSU, Ferentz said: “He seems to thrive in that situation, that circumstance.” “You better be careful with what you wish for with this quarterback because he’s good,” the head Hawkeye said. “He’s really good.”

Tate Forcier Texts ESPN's Pat Forde 90 Minutes After Loss

Forcier texted ESPN's "The Dash" the following message within 90 minutes of losing to MSU: "I take complete fault for that loss."

"That's the way he is," said Mike Forcier, Tate's father. "He just wants to win. It's about winning for him."

David Molk Will Return in How Many Weeks?

Center David Molk is still recovering from his broken foot against Eastern Michigan. He is back in the weight room and participating in drills like the power clean, but there are conflicting reports on how soon he'll be back.

The Michigan Daily (no comment) reports that "it could still be two to four weeks before Molk sees the field." The Detroit News reports that Molk is "out 1-2 more weeks."

The latter bases its conclusion on a Coach Rodriguez comment that "it's still a week or two until he's actually playing football."

Who knows which report is correct? Just because he's "playing football" in 1-2 weeks doesn't mean that he'll return to the field in 1-2 weeks. It sounds like it could be a few more weeks before Molk returns.

Mark Ortmann Discusses Iowa's Defensive Line

Darryl Stonum and the Kick Return Team Are Fantastic

Going into this season, I wouldn't have believed you if you told me we'd average over 30 yards a return on kick-offs. This is a team who couldn't even catch the kickoff last year. Rich Rodriguez mentioned in the pre-season that if we caught all of the kicks this season, we'd be automatically better than last year. He was right. But I don't think any of us expected it to be this good.

Sophomore KR Darryl Stonum is averaging 30.1 yards per return. It's clear that he is not only finding the right hole and attacking it hard, but that his teammates on special teams are blocking very well. It seems as though there's always a nice hole that Stonum finds. He always seems to get past that first layer of players. Whatever it is, it's working.

“We were hoping that and he’s got great speed and very productive in that out of high school,” Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said. “But Darryl, and this is a second-year player, as they get older sometimes some of the things you hoped would happen and that they’d develop comes to fruition.”

“It’s a great feeling,” Stonum said. “Once you get to the second level and all you have to do is make one guy miss and you see yourself going up the field and you see the Michigan on the end zone and home free.”

The only criticism of Stonum so far this season is his ability to hold on to the football. Stonum fumbled the ball twice with Michigan recovering one back in last weekend's contest. Sure it was slippery, but he needs to work on ball protection.

That being said, the foundation has been laid for Stonum to have an excellent kick return/receiving career at Michigan. Having those extra yards will be critical this season, in particular, as many games will continue to come down to field position.

Tate Forcier Takes Blame for Last Throw

Although it's not really a surprise considering he threw a poor pass into double coverage, Tate has accepted responsibility for the costly mistake. "I take complete blame for that," Forcier said. "That's something I told myself I wasn't going to do -- make a freshman mistake."

Forcier said there was a miscommunication with Martavious Odoms. "I thought he was going to keep coming, but (Rucker) was the one who kept coming," Forcier said. "I just threw it. Like I said, freshman mistake. Everybody has an off-day, and today wasn't the day for us."

On replay, it does appear that Odoms had Rucker beat but then slowed and Rucker made an extra effort to go for the ball. Who knows what was supposed to happen. Brandon Minor even suggested it wasn't Tate's fault. "I don't think he blamed himself for that last play, but I know he felt bad about it," Minor said

But at the end of the day, a pic's a pic. "Tate will learn from (his mistakes)," Rodriguez said. "He's a true freshman, and to have a true freshman out there competing the way he did, and throughout the game, is pretty remarkable. He'll keep growing and getting better from this game."

Fake Punt Was Mesko's Decision - Should He Have Had the Authority?

Zoltan "Chicks Don't Dig the Fake Punt From Your Own 16" Mesko made the read to fake the punt when the Wolverines were trailing 10-6 from their own 16 yard line.

"He was supposed to kick it," Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said. "It was a read, and Zoltan, he's made that decision very, very well a number of times, and that time he thought he saw a crease, I guess. The defense did a good job of holding them to three (points). That (failed fake punt) wasn't a determining factor in the game."

I'm not sure I agree with Rodriguez. The game went into overtime. If MSU had 3 fewer points, we would have won. I also question the decision to give Mesko the authority/discretion to make that call on that yardline. Of course, you trust your All-World Senior punter, but I just don't feel comfortable giving him that authority that deep in enemy territory. It's one thing to have it on the 50, maybe even the 40. But deferring that far out in a 4 point game, I just don't agree.

Game Recap: MSU 26 - UM 20

Tate Forcier and Michigan gave themselves a chance to win a game they didn't deserve to win with an unbelievable 92-yard drive to tie the game with under 3 minutes to go. Forcier was simply amazing. Although the game winning drive against Notre Dame was more important, today's drive was more impressive. The conditions were terrible, and he was winded to the point of near collapse. He ran. He threw. And when his team needed him most at the end of regulation, he delivered.

Michigan had an incredible amount of momentum heading into overtime, but failed to capitalize on it with an ugly interception in the endzone after moving the ball ahead. MSU needed only a single point to seal the game from the 25 yard line, but the first play resulted in a nine-yard loss. In typical fashion for MSU today, they overcame the yardage deficit and ultimately delivered. A few plays later, MSU won the game on a 23 yard scamper from freshman Larry Caper, who escaped what should have been an easy, wrap-up tackle from Safety Troy Woolfork.

While the story of the day is MSU's first back-to-back victories over Michigan in over 40 years, for Michigan fans, the good news is there will never be another point this season where the Wolverines count themselves out of any game. Ever. No matter how poorly they play, the ability and leadership of Forcier to put points on the board when it matters most cannot be questioned. He has proven it time and time again this season. And it will make the Wolverines fun to watch this year with several more heartbreaking losses and breathtaking wins sure to come.

Go Blue.

Wolverines Won't Get Caught Looking Ahead

It may be easy for the Wolverines to look ahead to their showdown at Iowa the following week. But don't be fooled. They're not. Not after last year's beating in the Big House. These Wolverines want that trophy back and want it badly.

Rece Davis of ESPN agrees: "Michigan won't peek ahead to its trip to Iowa on Oct. 10. Not when the Wolverines are spending the weekend on the banks of the old Red Cedar River complete with a chance to unite Spartans fans all over the state for a common cause: the start of basketball season. If Michigan State loses to Michigan, the Spartans' football season might not be over, but it will be all but impossible to keep it from being a profound disappointment. The rivalry should keep Rich Rod's team focused."

Forcier Will Play

Rich Rodriguez has said that he fully expects Forcier to "be ready to go and do everything." Tate was limited Tuesday to rest his bruised shoulder. "It's just a sore shoulder -- he landed on it (last week against Indiana)," Rodriguez said. "He would have done everything in practice (Tuesday) but it was on his throwing shoulder. (We wanted to) rest it, so he could make all his throws (Wednesday) and the rest of the week."
